May was an exciting month with a once-in-30-year storm and then the cleaning up of all the mess thereafter. But May was not without celebration. We love birthdays and this month we celebrated Esther’s 30th birthday. To celebrate we had a formal sit-down meal and sang songs to her.
We also had a social to celebrate Slipper Day, a fundraiser for Reach for a Dream, raising R600. We had fun wearing slippers to work, followed by soup and rolls and a “guess the sitcom” quiz. Well done to Wendy and Colin who were very good at remembering the music from sitcoms.
The team also visited the South Peninsula Handcrafters Centre’s biennial exhibition. The handcrafters were very generous to the workers, many of them receiving free samples.
Many of the team are keen crafters. Craft is part of the programme with a weekly craft group, run on Thursday afternoon by Andrea. This group is open to the community and people on our waiting list. Using donated craft items this group provides a social opportunity in a creative space.

The JCC skills development has been generated out of the requests by workers to improve their skills from a hobby into income generation. We now have woodwork, sewing, beading, cardmaking and plant propagation departments. The workers skills are developing their skills and their products are available in our shop and at markets.

This month our training hike took us up the mountains of Kalk Bay. We tried to clamber the last part up to Kalk Bay Peak, but didn’t quite make the last section. However, it was fun.
