Newsletter: What happens at JCC?

Remembering Matt Kabat May 2026 news

It was with great sadness that we said farewell to our friend and colleague Matt Kabat who passed away on 13th April 2026. He worked at JCC for 4 years. As a good friend and colleague, we miss his sense of humour, particularly favouring greetings in multiple languages, his caring as he prayed earnestly for many of us and his growth in confidence in public speaking to, in his final month with us, singing in the Karaoke. He loved his woodwork and his friends. We miss you Matt.
The role of the supervisor at JCC is to facilitate work. We call this support, filling in the gap between what the worker can do and the requirements of the job. This may be in the form of doing together, directing, assisting, supporting, correcting, teaching or facilitating. Choice of activities supports interest in the task and concentration. If someone had a mobility impairment, a wheelchair may offer support to allow the person to access things they want to do. A person (supervisor) is the support that a person with intellectual disability needs to access the things they want to do.  We have 5 supervisors and they are the heroes that make the work successful at JCC.

One of our goals outside of work is to hike up Table Mountain. So, in preparation, a group of keen hikers have been hiking on Saturdays. We have done 2 so far and this month’s training hike was the Silvermine Source to Sea fundraising hike for FOSNA (Friends of Silvermine Nature Area), a 12.5km hike down the river edge. What a beautiful day where we experienced rain, wind and lovely heat, all in one morning

Pictures here are from our Masked Dance, a wonderful opportunity to meet with the people on our waiting list or part of our social group. The JCC social committee try to organize an event each month so that we are not all work at JCC, but a little fun too.
